Starting in 1970, the serial number is stamped either above the oil filter, somewhere on the block pad (in front of the cylinder head), or on the transmission flange somewhere. 10243878 Small Block V8 1996-1997 305, 2-bolt, Vortec truck, roller cam, 1-piece rear seal. In 68-69 model cars, the serial (VIN) number of the car the engine was installed in is stamped next to, or under the engine code ID. From what I can tell, the ARP engine bolt set alone cost more than $200.00. 10199001 Small Block V8 1993-1995 350, 4-bolt, LT5, Corvette ZR1, 405hp. This little engine is headed for a 1957 Triumph TR3 project that is in the wings. Just thought I would share the find, I am not usually that lucky. That is why I felt fairly confident about the cam. It had a new double chain Cloyes gear set and then the before mentioned unmarked cam. The block bored 30 over and it had new teflon coated TRW pistons in place. It had a brand new deep sump Moroso Racing Oil Pan and new Melling Pump, Windage tray and ARP mains. ![]() ![]() The valley pan has had the oil weep holes tapped and plugged (old school racer trick) and the lifters and push rods are all brand new. In fact every bolt on the engine is an ARP: oil pan, fuel pump, motor mounts, timing cover, etc.). It also had new springs and valves and new ARP bolts. The heads have been completely worked over, a very nice port job. I pulled the heads which according to their markings are 283 Power Packs. I took it home and started to really delve into it. It was all put together and on an engine stand. When I went to pick it up and saw it for the first time, I about fell over. Last week my friend informed me he was going to do some renovation to his shop and wondered if I could come get the motor. The 327 happened to be at fellow friends house and he said it was not in the way and was dry and safe so I let it be. The friend that helped me wanted the sub frame so I let him have it on the condition he had to take what was left of the rest of the car. I figured a good 327 block was worth that much not to mention a rebuilt Nova subframe? I paid him and we drug the Nova out. He said if I could get the car out of there right away he would sell the whole thing for $200.00. He also said he had been building a 327 for it but it was stored at a friends house. Big block on the right side of engine above the oil pan rails. The house had been sold and he had to get it out right away but had no tailer or any place to go with it anyway. Small block casting date is located on driver side rear of block on flange forward of bellhousing. It sat on a garage floor with no rear end but he had completely rebuilt the front suspension but had no wheels or tires up there either. He had been building a 1975 Nova for years and had lost interest. About 3 years ago a guy I worked with said he had a problem. So it seems that the engine, trans and carb could all be from 68 or 69.While I am at it.I will tell you the whole story on this motor. Or I guess everything could be from 1968 and I could have a TH350 that came from a different donor car than the engine.Ĭan anyone glean any more information from the numbers? I'd really like to determine what what make/model/year of car served as the donor for this engine and transmission.Ģ839 = 283rd day of year, or October 10, 1969 If anything, I would expect the numbers to be the other way around - the engine casting code should be earlier than the VIN model year. 0404 indicates April 4th as the build date. For example, the engine code stamping number on a Chevy 327 engine might read V0404HC: V stands for the Flint, Michigan plant. I'm a little confused by the fact that the block casting number suffix of "HN" seems to state that the block was cast in 1989, while the VIN states that the car was some model of 1968 Chevy. This code contains important information about the engine, such as the plant where it was produced and the date of production. The VIN Code 18F232087 seems to decode as: I have to admit I didn't think to look up the tranny numbers yesterday. The trans is definitely a TH350, so if the engine and trans were put in together from the same donor vehicle, then it looks like I might have the 1969 engine/transmission. 1969 350 350 4 bbl turbo 350 high performanceġ968 327 250 4 bbl powerglideIt looks like I've got either the first engine (1969, 300 hp) or the 3rd engine (1968, 250 HP). ![]()
